The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has discovered a proliferation of fraudulent SMS that do not come from official operators. These SMS are sent via fake BTS: a device that tricks your smartphone and transmits signals as if they were coming from a real cellular tower.

 

A fake BTS is a cellular signal transmitter device that imitates the function of a real BTS tower belonging to a cellular operator. These fake BTS are not connected to an official network and are used by irresponsible parties for various detrimental purposes. Such as some cases, namely spreading fraudulent SMS, intercepting and changing SMS, and tricking victims into connecting to a fake network

 

Tips to Avoid Fake BTS Fraud

 

To protect yourself from fraud that utilizes fake BTS, the following can be done:

 

1. Don't Click on Suspicious Links

2. Verify Information

3. Do Not Provide Personal Information Via SMS

4. Check Sender Number

5. Activate Additional Security Features

6. Report Fraudulent SMS
